Species and seasons

There are 40 species of fish living in the waters of the Tampere Region and about a dozen of these are pursued by recreational anglers. The most common game species are pike, zander and perch. The open-water season lasts from when the ice melts in early May to the end of November, or even well into December on the largest lakes. The ice-fishing season lasts from December to early April.

Lake Ruovesi

Setting sights on big zander and pike

The major lakes are the region’s jewels, ranking among the elite of Finland’s zander waters. Lakes such as Längelmävesi, Rautavesi, Pyhäjärvi and Ruovesi are renowned for big zander. The Tampere Region really is a veritable Zanderland! The best season for zander is during the warmest period in the middle of summer.

Anglers’ basic game species are pike and perch – these are fish that you can go after in all waters. You can rest assured that there is a constant threat of big pike in open lake areas! Pike strike lures throughout the open-water season, while the season for perch extends from late June to September.

Lake Rautavesi

Salmonoids from lakes and rapids

The red-fleshed predatory fish, brown trout and landlocked salmon, are eager to snatch your lure on Lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi and on many other large lakes. Salmonoids favour cold water, which means that their best trolling seasons are in spring and late autumn. You can catch these fish in summer too by attaching a diver to the end of your line.

The game fish pursued on rapids by fly-fishing and spinning enthusiasts are brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling and ide. Examples of magnificent rapids sites include the Kotalan Kosket Rapids in Virrat, the Vilppulankoski Rapids in Vilppula and River Aurejoki in Ikaalinen. Among other species on the Siuronkoski Rapids in Nokia and the Kuokkalankoski Rapids in Lempäälä, the lines of anglers are whizzed by asp, cyprinids that grow to be large. You can also pursue them on the torrents of Lakes Kulovesi and Rautavesi and in the Toutonen area of Lake Pyhäjärvi.
